Lactose Tolerance Test

What is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose is a sugar that is found in milk and milk products.

The body should digest lactose with an enzyme produced by our bodies called lactase. Lactase breaks down the carbohydrate, lactose, into sugars called glucose and galactose, and these simpler sugars are absorbed into the blood stream to provide us with energy. However some people don’t produce enough lactase to break down all the lactose as it is consumed and therefore it passes through the small intestine into the colon.

Dairy Products

Lactose is mostly found in cow’s milk as well as some other dairy products

Lactose intolerance is the inability of adults to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and to a lesser extent dairy products, causing side effects. It is due to a lactase deficiency, or hypolactasia. Congenital lactase deficiency prevents babies from drinking even human milk.
