What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition experienced by about one in five Australians at some point. Those experiencing IBS have a more sensitive gastrointestinal tract and experience gut symptoms on a more regular basis.

These symptoms may include; diarrhoea or constipation (or a fluctuation between the two), abdominal pain and bloating, nausea and excessive wind.

What causes IBS?

The cause of IBS is unknown, however it has been known to be triggered by stress or emotions, illness/infections and dietary components.

The xylose, sorbitol or glucose load tests may be useful for monitoring IBS which is reflected by the amount of malabsorption of the substance if there is no previously diagnosed intolerances to these substances.


How do I manage IBS?

IBS symptoms can often be effectively managed by removing certain dietary components known to exacerbate IBS such as fermentable foods, caffeine and spicy foods. Other treatment pathways may include; stress management and medications to manage bowel symptoms such as laxatives or antidiarrhoeals.
