Coeliac Disease Monitoring

The Xylose test can be used to monitor coeliac disease management, and assists in the diagnosis of food intolerances, malabsorptive conditions and Irritable bowel syndrome.

Results of the Xylose test will enable your treating health practitioners to evaluate whether you are malabsorbing food as it reflects the amount of villous atrophy occurring in the gut which may help guide to guide your treatment plan.

Gluten - found in bread, wheat, pasta

Symptoms of xylose malabsorption may include:

  • chronic diarrhoea
  • weight loss
  • malnutrition

Using Xylose Intolerance testing for Coeliac Disease Monitoring

This test involves xylose being given as a solution in water to drink, with Hydrogen/Methane breath testing and symptom monitoring being performed at regular intervals for 2-3 hours to determine intolerance. You will need to commence this test in a fasted state.

Sorbitol can also be used to monitor coeliac disease management and has been shown to be better than anti-endomyosial antibodies in revealing histological recovery in the follow-up of coeliac patients after the start of gluten-free diet due to its good correlation with histological damage if there is no previously diagnosed intolerances to sorbitol.  It also appears to be able to detect dietary mistakes of patients on a gluten free diet according to a study by Tursi et al.1
